If you've been following my blog posts, you know that I used to live under bridges, too. My favorite was the Manhattan Beach Boulevard / Interstate 405 overpass. I also lived under the Interstate 10 in Culver City and under the 101 from Hollywood to downtown L.A.
There used to be a guy working for a veterans outreach program who came down from street level fairly often to beat the bushes and cardboard boxes looking for veterans to scoop up into one of the veterans shelters, but funding was cut for that program so now homeless U.S. military veterans have to find their own ways off the street.
I was one of those guys. I found my own ways off the street. It's not as easy as you might think. There are forces aligned to prevent safety net escapees from returning to the fold: counterproductive government rules and regulations and exclusionary barriers and dead-eyed social workers and the great masses of taxpayers and property owners who want nothing more than to criminalize the homeless so that the filthy bums can be locked away out of sight and conscience.
