I joined the American Legion post that's located here in my homeless veterans shelter. Attached is the logo I created for the post when they said they needed one for their official flag. They'd always dreamed of having their own official flag.
It’s ugly. It’s very, very ugly. In my defense, I must say that I was only following orders and it was designed by a committee of recovering drug addicts. I just drew it and slapped it together for them.
Also, the Legionnaire who was coordinating this project between me and the sots on the committee is a PTSD veteran who was a sniper in Nam with many kills under his belt. If he wanted to have his organization represented by a pigeon standing on a sea turtle, well hell, so be it. I ain’t gonna argue the logic.
It could’ve been worse. There was MORE ugliness the Legionnaires wanted me to commit to this poor, ugly thing, but I refused to break ALL the graphic rules of good taste in one single logo. This thing had to be approved by the U.S. Congress, I reminded them. (It was, to my astonishment, approved by Congress.)
I drew the turtle and flags in Illustrator 10, scanned in the bird and the American Legion flag and finished up the text and the rest in Photoshop 7 when I wasn't attending Veterans In Progress meetings where I was being told I didn't have talent for anything other than security guard work.
God, this is ugly. It’s version twelve. My only consolation is that the Legionnaires didn’t settle on the eleven other uglier versions.
My post’s logo. It screams for attention. Yeah, we’re slow as turtles and being taken for pigeons around here all right.
