What’s The Frequency, Dan?No rhinoceros has a hide so thick that some well-placed, hard-thrown, pointed spear can’t get under it – Dan Rather
Not that finding a working payphone in Santa Monica would be any kind of problem for me now. I had become atuned to the payphone frequency.
After only a few weeks driving call girls, I could spot an unlit payphone in a darkened store doorway a quarter of a mile away going 65 miles an hour through a residential district during a neighborhood blackout. I had to. It was part of the job.
There are two things an escort driver has to be able to spot on the fly if he wants to stay in the business: a working payphone and an unlocked restroom. The payphones aren’t much of a challenge, but Angelinos guard their public restrooms more seriously than their daughters.
Finding an unlocked public restroom in L.A. in the middle of the night is a daunting task. I suspect that the guy who beat up Dan Rather in New York because Dan couldn’t tell him "the frequency" was a bloated escort driver mad with payphone/restroom fever.
Finding an unlocked public restroom in L.A. in the middle of the night? Damn, that is a steep job requirement!
