WHY WOULD SOMEONE MUG A HOMELESS GUY?

A lot of creeps tried to mug me when I was homeless. More often than you would think.

Why would someone bother to mug a homeless person? Same reason there's so much black-on-black crime:

(1) Proximity (it takes too long for a mugger to take the bus from Compton to Los Feliz just to mug somebody for $20) and

(2) Culture: it's just more comfortable to mug someone you understand.
Also

(3) The Crippled Bird Syndrome. Looking helpless and unarmed attracts muggers like flies to dung.

And homeless people generally don't have bank accounts, so they have to carry around the $196 a month they get for General Relief or the $700 a month some get for SSI. Some are on state disability. I have been getting two disability checks for the last 30 years: $112 a month from the V.A. and $338 a month Army disability, so I was a bum with cash.

Then there's the working homeless, the RV-dwellers, the station wagon gypsy caravans, the park-dwelling bicycle vagrants, the crack motel hoppers, the shelter vultures, the U-Store-It storage room Sneak In-Sneak Out residents. All kinds. All flavors.

Generally, the L.A. police were too busy protecting property to care about crimes against the homeless and muggers knew that.
Although homelessness is hard, it's also enticing for its freedoms. Sometimes I miss the street.
