The Trickster Reality

A Budhist's hobby horse,

The sandals of of Dervish,

A Yogi's mat;

These are the tools

of the seekers.

My tools

are a keyboard,

an internet connection

and a stick of vanilla root in my mouth

(to keep me from blowin' smoke

on the monitor).

I sit here,

chewing on the stick,

chewing on Life,

sitting in a homeless shelter computer room

full of homeless men
searching the internet for jobs,

and I know

that somewhere between

hyperarousal

and sensory depravation,

somewhere between
the methamphetamine

and the lockdown

that these men have experienced,

somewhere between the mountain peaks

and the valley of the shadow of death,

somewhere

sits the trickster Reality.

I sit here,

chewing on the stick,

thinking about Reality,

whose bottom line

is harsh and unrelenting

death.

I sit here,

chewing on Life,

amidst this mixed caudron
of homeless men--

these excluded--
moving back in,

and I consider

the forces of humorless greed

aligned against them,

and I hope the trickster Reality

is feeling compassionate today.
